For configuring a cable internet connection with a NETGEAR router – Netgear router setup which uses the Smart Wizard user interface, follow the following steps:

  1. Start by connecting your modem to the internet port of your Netgear router as well as connecting your computer to any of the Netgear router’s four LAN ports.

    Note: For cable internet connections on Netgear router, the Netgear router Setup Wizard will detect Dynamic IP.
  10. Click on Next and the Netgear router saves the Netgear router configuration settings.

  1. Unplug both your cable/broadband modem and Netgear router power cords connected to a power source.
    Note: If there is any back-up battery on your modem, you will need to remove it temporarily.
  2. Establish connections between your Netgear router, modem and computer. For connecting modem to the Netgear router, use an Ethernet cable from the modem to the Internet port of your Netgear router (yellow cable). To log in to your Netgear N1200C router and access the Netgear router settings:

  1. Launch a web browser from your computer or mobile device which is connected to the network of your Netgear router.
  2. Type the Netgear router IP which would be either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar and press Enter.
  3. You can also access your Netgear router login page through routerlogin.net or routerlogin.com by typing the web address in the web browser.

Steps to configure your Netgear router for cable internet connection with Netgear genie:

  • Disconnect or unplug power cords of your modem and router.
    Note: in case your modem has a power battery backup, you must remove it temporarily.
  • Connect your Netgear router to the modem by attaching one end of an Ethernet cable to the modem and the other end into the internet port on the router. The internet port is yellow colored and located slightly apart from the rest of the Netgear router ports.

Steps to configure your DSL modem router for internet connection through NETGEAR genie:

Note:  If you have any existing DSL modem or modem router already connected on your network, you must remove it from your network.

  • These web addresses will take you automatically to the Netgear genie set up a screen.
  • Click on Yes and then, click on Next to continue.
  • Select your Country and then, click on Next.
  • The Netgear router Smart Setup Wizard detects the type of internet connection on your network. The Setup Wizard will detect PPPoE/PPPoA as your DSL connection type.
  • You will be required to log in to your internet connection and the login details for the smear will be provided to you by your Internet Service Provider.
  • Type these internet connection login details into the Login and Password fields on this screen and click on Next.
  • The router then applies these settings automatically. On completion of the Netgear router set up, you can verify whether you are connected to the internet by clicking on Take me to the Internet.

Sometimes when the Netgear router configuration fails, you must contact your Internet Service Provider for obtaining the correct login credentials and then try again to complete the Netgear router setup.

  • You must then connect the computer to any of the yellow colored four LAN ports on the Netgear router.
  • Connect the Netgear DSL modem router to the power source and turn it on and wait for about a minute for it to boot up.

  • Following this, The Netgear Smart Setup Wizard will report which connection type it has discovered and then display its configuration page. You must then follow the steps under the internet connection type that has been detected by your Netgear router.
    Note: If the Netgear Smart Setup Wizard does not find any connection type, you must then check the physical connection of your devices, and thereby ensure that your ISP has already activated your DSL account.
  • The Netgear router then saves these settings. On completion of the Netgear router setup, you can further verify whether you are connected to the Internet by going to the Netgear Router Status under the Maintenance menu.
